“Hybrid” is the buzzword in mattresses, but it has a simple explanation: a pocket-sprung core with a layer of memory foam on top. It addresses the two most common sleep problems at once: heat and pressure on the shoulders and hips. We’ll explain how it works and when it’s worth choosing over memory foam.
How a hybrid mattress is made
- Pocket-sprung core: hundreds of springs, each in its own fabric pocket, that compress independently according to the weight of each area of the body.
- Memory foam layer: memory foam that adapts to your shape and distributes pressure.
- 3D fabric on the underside: in Matris models, allowing air to circulate between the springs.

The same mattress, with and without springs
The best way to understand what springs add is to compare the same model in its two versions. The Luxury Core has an HR foam core, while the Core pocket-sprung replaces that core with springs, with the same gel memory foam on top. Both are 30 cm high and have a medium-firm feel. In 150x190 cm, they cost €244.95 and €279.95: a €35 difference for a cooler mattress with more bounce. The same applies to the Luxury Intelligent and the Intelligent pocket-sprung.
What you gain with a hybrid
- Coolness: air circulates between the springs, and you’ll notice the difference in summer.
- Bed independence: if you sleep with a partner, you’ll barely notice when they turn over or get up.
- Firm edges: you can use the entire surface, even when sitting on the edge.
- Bounce: you can change positions with less effort than on a pure memory foam mattress, where you sink in a little more.

Three Matris hybrids
The Hybrid Pure Gel is the most affordable, from €169.95: 30 cm high, with Plus gel memory foam and Sanitized hygiene treatment. The Paradise has 750 Spring Pocket springs (in 150x190 cm) and 4 cm of premium gel memory foam, with a classic design, from €179.95. And the Hotel 5 Stars pocket-sprung increases to 5 cm of Premium Gel memory foam for a hotel-bed feel, from €194.95.

What base to put it on
A hybrid needs a firm base that allows air to circulate: a slatted bed base or a storage bed with a breathable lid. Avoid old spring box springs, which reduce support. And turn it from head to foot every few months so the springs wear evenly.
Is a hybrid right for you?
It’s worth it if you sleep with a partner, get hot while sleeping, or like a firm mattress that doesn’t feel hard. If you sleep alone, in a cool room, and prefer a stable surface, a memory foam mattress will give you the same thing for less money. Compare models in spring mattresses and memory foam mattresses.
